Short Historical Statement
BODC traces its origins to the British
Oceanographic Data Service established at the National Institute of Oceanography
in 1968, which was reorganised into the Marine Information and Advisory Service
(MIAS) at the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences in 1976. The data banking
component of MIAS at the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory was reorganised into
BODC in 1989. Throughout its history, the data centre has been managed and
funded by NERC.
