The Government's Foresight programme ( http://www.foresight.gov.uk ) co-ordinated by the Office of Science and Technology, aims to improve the competitiveness of the UK economy and enhance the quality of life by bringing together business, the science base and Government to identify and respond to emerging opportunities in markets and technologies. The Marine Panel, formed in 1995, was one of 10 Sector Panels which helped to drive the second round of the UK Foresight Programme forward. The Panel consisted of representatives from academia, industry and government and was chaired by Mr. Goodrich, British Maritime Technology Ltd. It established four marine Task Forces responsible for delivering tightly focused objectives which had been agreed through consultation with the marine sector. These task forces included: · Energies from the Sea · Aquaculture 2010 · Maritime Transport Chain · Management of Marine Resources and the Marine Environment Following a review of the Foresight Programme, the new round - launched in April 2002 - moved away from Panel based activities towards a fluid, rolling programme that will look at 3 or 4 areas at any one time. As a result, the work of the Marine Panel is now being taken forward under the Chairmanship of Maurice Storey, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. A new Marine Foresight website is currently under construction and a link will appear here shortly. For further information about the Marine Foresight Panel and its activities, please write to:
