Principal Functions
To provide facilities for marine research, particularly
aquaculture related research.
General Details
The marine environmental research laboratory is a
shore-based experimental unit provided with a pumped supply of high quality seawater. The
facility comprises approximately 100 holding tanks of various sizes supplied with seawater
at ambient temperature and salinity for general experimental work, an isolation suite with
effluent disinfection for research on infectious diseases of marine organisms, heated
recirculation systems suitable for studies with tropical and warm water species, and a
fully equipped laboratory. Various fish stocks are available. Recent additions
to the facilities include the installation of large tanks, filtered seawater supply
and additional temperature controlled systems.
Specification
Tank arrays and experimental systems are upgraded
frequently. Current specifications may be obtained from the manager.
Special Features
Research staff undertake a wide range of studies on a
contract basis. Full technical support is available. Senior academic staff may act in an
advisory capacity if required. Studies can be undertaken in compliance with good
laboratory practice.
Future Plans
Development of large scale marine hatcheries
Availability
The facility is available to other bodies in both the
private and public sector. There are no restrictions on the type of body that can apply to
use the facility. About one months advance notice is required when asking for time on the
facility. Time is allocated on an as available basis.
Charging Basis
Charging rates are subject to individual negotiation.
There is the possibility of negotiating an exchange agreement. The minimum hire period is
one month.
Site Access
A scheduled air service operates between Glasgow and
Machrihanish twice daily. The site has access for vehicles and local accommodation is
readily available for the hirers staff.
