Principal Functions
Holding, spawning, larval culture on-grow of cold,
temperate and tropical marine organisms.
General Details
Currently used to reproduce and spawn tropical penaeid
and marine ornamental shrimp, Nephrops and Macrobrachium. Temperate facility used with sea
bream, salmonids, flatfish and bivalves. Allows research on genetics, nutrition,
pollutants, aspects of disease.
Specification
30m3 recirculation/through flow heated
seawater tanks. 10m3 temperate (0350C) seawater tanks. Algal
culture unit, live feed culture unit. Ultra violet sterilisation, ozonizer and filtration
of water to 0.2 Fm available, direct supply good quality seawater.
Special Features
X-ray (diagnostic) facility. Bomb calorimetry, Kjeldahl
facilities, computer-linked feeding systems for fish. Support staff trained in all aspects
of algal and live feed culture, diet preparation and live stock maintenance. MAFF approved
holding facility for tropical species research.
Future Plans
Recent purchase of spray drier allows diet development
and production.
Availability
The facility is available to other bodies in both the
private and public sector. There are no restrictions on the type of body that can apply to
use the facility. Three months advance notice is required when asking for time on the
facility. Time is allocated on the following basis; academic research, student training
and industrial contracts.
Charging Basis
Charging rates are subject to individual negotiation.
There is a possibility of negotiating an exchange agreement. The minimum hire period is
one week, and the maximum 3 months.
Site Access
The site has ready access for vehicles and local
accommodation is available for the hirers staff.
