Offshore Sea Facility
Parent Body: HR Wallingford Ltd., Howberry Park, Wallingford, OX10 8BA

Principal Functions
Provision of a scale model offshore environment for the testing of fixed and floating offshore and port related structures.

General Details
The Offshore Sea Facility is used for generating a scale model offshore environment consisting of wind and waves in which models of offshore and port structures are tested. Motions and forces on the models are measured in order to assess the performance of the structure in either installation, operational or survival conditions. Any type of wave condition can be generated, be they regular, random, long or short crested. The method of wave generation used results in spectra that are continuous in the frequency domain and short crested seas being homogenous over a large percentage of the basin area.

Specification
The basin is 25m × 25m × 2m deep. A central 4m × 4m × 4m pit allows local depth up to 6m. Waves are generated using 80 computer controlled paddles using the principle of filtering white noise generated by a binary shift register in real time, allowing extreme flexibility in the choice of wave conditions and length of experiment. A maximum significant wave height of 0.24m with a maximum of 0.5m can be generated for both long and short crested series. Wind forces are simulated using banks of fans.

Special Features
There is a powerful data logging and analysis system on the wave basin that can collect up to 72 channels of data at up to 50Hz, and provide complex statistical data analysis on a turn around basis. Instrumentation is provided using commercially available or purpose built transducers as required. Above and underwater video is available.

Availability
The facility is available to other bodies in both the private and public sector. There are no restrictions on the type of body that can apply to use the facility. The advance notice required is dependent on the workload. Time on the facility is allocated on a commercial basis.

Charging Basis
Charging rates are subject to negotiation.
