Mission Statement

To conduct high quality environmental research.

  • Promote the development of high quality, internationally recognised research on physical, chemical and biological aspects of environmental processes.
  • Foster interactions among environmental scientists with diverse backgrounds in chemistry, ecology, marine sciences, geology, eco-toxicology and other related subjects (environmental management, socio-economics, etc.) to create an holistic view of environmental issues.
  • Provide a focal point for interactions with other universities, government organisations, research institutes and industry, both nationally and internationally.

Short Historical Statement

PERC was founded officially in March 1996 by Professor John Krebs FRS, then Chief Executive of NERC. However, its roots can be traced back to the strong marine influence within the University of Plymouth, and, more recently to the targeting of resources and expertise in making high quality chemical, physical and biological measurements of the environment. It currently supports the following major subject areas: Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Biology, Marine Physical Sciences, Earth Sciences and Environmental Policy.
