Proudman Oceanographic Library

Principal Functions
Provision of information for physical oceanography and related areas to POL staff and other researchers in the field.

General Details
The library holds a major collection of material in the field of physical oceanography with a stock of around 5,000 books, 15,000 reprints and reports, 80 current journal titles, maps and charts. Subjects covered include: tides, dynamics of shelf and slope seas, sea level, marine pollution, numerical modelling, sedimentation, sediment measurements and dynamics.

Special Features
The Library runs a database BIDLIB using OLIB software. It provides access to scientists to over 100,000 journal articles, 10,000 conference papers, 3,500 reports and 1,600 article reprints in the relevant subject areas. The Library is also a contributor to the NISC "Marine, Oceanographic and Freshwater Resources".

Future Plans
Upgrades to the OLIB software are planned for 2000. An investigation is currently being carried out into the feasibility of retrospective conversion of the card catalogue.

Availability
The facility is available to other bodies in both the private and public sector. There are no restrictions on the type of body that can apply to use the facility. At least 24 hours advance notice is required when asking for time on the facility.

Charging Basis
Charge rates are subject to individual negotiation. There is the possibility of negotiating an exchange agreement.
