Armfield 56 Tilting Flume

Principal Functions
Laboratory study of waves, currents and sediment transport.

Subsidiary Functions
Testing of small physical models and small sea–going equipment.

General Details
Tilting flume with wavemaker at one end and potential for a beach at the other. Pumping system to generate currents (which may be superimposed on opposing waves if required). Sediment recirculation loop present. Stainless steel bed.

Specification
Armfield – Model 56 spl/11/10m. Working section dimensions 10m × 0.45m × 0.30m. Doppler rate of flow indicator. Wedge-type wavemaker complete with beach. 56–14 Power operated jacks. Additional instrumentation: Armfield wave gauges, Micro-propeller current meters.

Special Features
Main special feature is sediment recirculation loop which allows steady state conditions to be established in wave and current sediment-laden flows.

Availability
The facility is available to other bodies in both the private and public sector. There are no restrictions on the type of body that can apply to use the facility. Four months advance notice is required when asking for time on the facility.

Charging Basis
Charging rates are subject to individual negotiation.

Site Access
The site has ready access for vehicles and local accommodation is available for the hirer’s staff.
