Mission Statement

The provision of undergraduate courses and post graduate research training to develop an understanding of the role played by the oceans in global chemical, physical and climatic cycles, and to promote an awareness of how the oceans react to both natural and anthropogenic environmental changes affecting the Planet Earth.

Short Historical Statement

The Chair of Oceanography at the University of Liverpool was founded in 1919, and was initially held by Sir William Herdman and later by Joseph Proudman, Ken Bowden and John Riley. The Oceanography Laboratories became part of the Department of Earth Sciences in 1987, and the six academic staff of the laboratories have interests in chemical and physical oceanography.

Major Programmes

WOCE, JGOFS, CLIVAR, COPEC, ACSYS, EMERGE, COMET, IRON AGE, ARABASQUE, BENGAL, ACES, ECOMOUND.

Research Leaders

  • Professor R Chester – trace metal chemistry of marine sediments, aerosols and rainwaters.
  • Dr C M G van den Berg – speciation of trace metals in natural waters.
  • Dr M R Preston – organic micro-pollutants in the atmosphere and the marine environment.
  • Dr G A Wolff – organic biogeochemistry, carbon burial in sediments, role of benthos, palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironment.
  • Dr H Leach – ocean circulation, studies of eddies and their influence on primary productivity, inter-annual variability in the oceans.
  • Dr R G Williams – ocean dynamics, modelling of physical processes, role of physical processes in oceanic biogeochemistry.
